Bicycle Theft - A Sin Unforgivable?

After hearing someone's heartbreaking story of pilfered pedals this weekend I couldn't help but think of just how much people are effcted by this.  The former (and hopefuly future) bike owner was nearly in tears, they couldn't believe that someone would do this to them.

Are bicycle theifs the work of the bicycle devil?  Or do they serve a purpose in the cycle of the cycle?  I've be fortunate enough to be able to hold my beloved bike tight so far, but if and when the day comes, I wonder how I will react.  Probably something like this, I assume.

What was your reaction and action after your most heartbreaking bike theft?  How do you feel it fits in with the bigger picture?
