The Cathedral of Immaculate Conception is conducting the second annual "Blessing of the Bikes" this Sunday in NW Portland.
Moses attended last year's blessing and enjoyed the service. The service was outside in the parking lot, and "they had a bicycle on an alter with a cross on it, which I thought was pretty cool." The service consisted of a short service by the priest, some words from the mother of a slain Portland cyclist. Then the the priest blessed everyone's bicycles with holy water and gave out Madonna del Ghisallo stickers.
Moses notes "I had an accident-free year, except for my induced accident, I found it to work [the blessing]. I'd be interested to know if anybody else who went to the Bike Blessing had an accident last year."
I'm glad to see that Portland is growing a tradition of bicycle blessings. Hopefully we'll see it expand into other churches, and perhaps expand into healing of bicycles and other new directions.
